Employment After Vocational Rehabilitation Predicts Decreased Health Care Utilization in Veterans With Mental Health Diagnoses

ABSTRACT Introduction Although the benefits of employment for veterans with mental health conditions are well-known, effect veterans’ on a system has not been evaluated. The purpose this study was to evaluate (versus unemployment) subsequent care utilization in Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Materials and Methods This used sample 29,022 substance use disorders who were discharged from VHA’s services programs between fiscal years 2006 2010. Veterans’ status (employed/unemployed) upon discharge VHA ascertained program forms linked administrative data 1- 5-year periods. Results Multivariable ordinary least-squares logistic regression models adjusted site clustering covariates indicated that predicted less 1 year 5 post-discharge services, including fewer outpatient visits, homelessness primary lower odds hospitalizations, or vocational rehabilitation residential stays, medical hospitalizations. Employment did predict emergency department visits. Conclusions investment could reduce wide.
